modernized mosin nagant

Modernized Mosin Nagant - Raven (KPIK), a Ukrainian company, has released a series of aluminum stocks for Mosin Nagant, Remington 700, Hova 1500 and SIG Sauer 202 rifles. TFB Mike R. was using a Raven Remington 700 chassis and they were kind enough to send me a Mosin chassis -Nagant. There may be people who consider the Mosin-Nagant rifle to be "junk" and therefore unwilling to use it for anything more than historical appreciation. However, some Mosins have been well maintained and are still drivers that can be pushed beyond the accuracy of cheap junk guns. So if you're an "all chassis" shooter, I hope you find this review helpful.

Just to be clear, the hole in my Mosin isn't bright and shiny like one of the junk guns to begin with, but I can provide a proof of concept of sorts. First of all, Raven knew what they were doing when they designed the chassis and there were no problems with its installation. Second, I don't want to permanently change my rifle because I still want to go back to the original configuration for historical reference. In order to fully install the Raven chassis, I had to remove the front and rear sights, which I wanted, as they were only held in place by dovetails and pins and everything could change down the road. I also want to explain that Raven is giving away the chassis for free with no expectation of return, but I have no problem being honest and objective.

My initial impressions of the Raven Mosin-Nagant chassis were mixed. I was impressed with the solid construction of the chassis and the clarity to match. On the other hand, the Raven's chassis is very light, so I was expecting a lot of recoil, which I'll get into later in the review.

In the picture you'll see I installed the optic, I realized my setup wasn't the best, but it provides a proof of concept while still being able to return the gun to its original configuration. Another scope mounting configuration will cut out a small portion of the handguard groove to allow the rear sight of the scope mount to be used for a firmer point of contact with the other entry of the barrel itself. However, from the replacement scope mounts I've seen, they are generally not well thought out, but I have no experience with them. Raven recommends drilling and hammering Mosin-Nagant receivers.

The handguard is full of M-LOK slots at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions, while the skeletonized stock has slots for mounting rails as well as monopods.

Raven also makes its own Picatinny rails in a variety of sizes and colors and can really add to the versatility of the Mosin Nagant chassis. The red and gold rail is actually made as a key chain, but it's also functional.

The guard rail will of course also accept an M-LOK belt adapter, but at first glance, many relief parts can provide quick attachment points for HK-style belt hooks, or even the original Mosin Nagant "dog collar" belt attachment .

Raven's Mosin-Nagant chassis is designed to accept a fixed assembly, but also makes its own assembly adapter. The MSRP is listed as $99 on the website. The locking of the folding adapter is very tight with no wobble. It also locks in place when folded.

Shortest length of pull (LOP) measured without additional spacers, but with a folding adapter. The stock assembly can be adjusted together with the base tube.

Raven designed the Mosin-Nagant chassis to work with the ProMag Archangel detachable five- or ten-round magazine, originally designed for the Archangel Stock system. I had to make two minor modifications to the Archangel magazine, but it was very easy to do with just a saw and a file.

I had to cut a small notch on the left side of the magazine to allow the Mosin-Nagant bushing to move freely. I also had to file about sixteen inches off the bottom of the magazine catch lug to allow the paddle release built into the chassis to lock the magazine into the well.

One consistent problem I have is that the last round in the magazine doesn't completely release itself, but a little help from a screwdriver can release it every time. Otherwise, the magazine works smoothly and loads each round on top of the last cartridge.

Earlier in the review, I mentioned that I was concerned about the impulse recoil of the lightweight chassis, however, that concern went out the window after the first shot with the Raven chassis. Between the inherent weight of the Mosin-Nagant action and barrel, and the very functional shock absorption of the Raven stock, I can't believe how soft and smooth the shooting is. A gun like I set the weight just a hair under 10 pounds. Last fall I decided to let my son wait to shoot the Savage 10 in .308 Winchester because I was worried about punishing him, but I handed the Mosin-Nagant to my twelve-year-old son and he agreed. it's pretty fun to shoot.

Because of the scope mounting configuration, I make sure that each shot is completed while supporting the body of the main chassis instead of pressing on the handguard groove which can affect the scope. However, the Mosin-Nagant 91/30 was not a driver when I bought it for $100. I shot four-inch groups at 100 yards, so the Raven Mosin Nagant chassis doesn't improve accuracy, but better examples can help free up the barrel and provide action in a solidly built chassis. Despite the accuracy issues presented by my personal rifle, I can still hit some steel targets at 100 and 200 yards, which brings a smile to my face with every report.

While the Raven's Mosin-Nagant chassis may be aimed at a limited market of Mosin-Nagant owners, I was impressed with the Raven's quality and engineering. The Mosin-Nagant chassis provides a unique and modern look to the old warhorse and allows the shooter to customize the rifle using M-LOK or Picatinny 1913 rail attachments. Removing the original sights is a challenge, but I enjoy working with my hands. As I said, the conversion to the Raven chassis can be done without permanently modifying the Mosin-Nagant rifle, but for best results you will need to drill and tap the receiver, but the rifle will still recoil. to the original configuration if you want.

The Raven Chassis has an MSRP of $450 and currently ships from Ukraine. This cost can be positive or negative depending on the mindset. For some, adding a $450 stock to a sub-$400 rifle (plus a drill and sight tap) may be considered counterintuitive, but for others it offers a highly accurate Mosin rifle to convert into a low-barreled modular rifle. also at the price of a more modern chassis adapted gun.

You can view the main Raven page here and the chassis page here. Raven also has a Facebook page with more pictures. What do you think of the Raven chassis system for Mosin-Nagant rifles? Do you have the exact Mosin-Nagant to put in the chassis?
