Rio Taxi San Antonio - San Antonio feels like it's in the middle of an identity crisis. This sleek, refurbished Art Deco building sits on a clean sidewalk in the middle of a block of pawnshops and tattoo parlors. which is a sidewalk that gathers people smoking and littering The glory of this city center can be seen from the shabby architecture of the buildings. It is currently struggling to maintain its identity as an entertainment and nightlife destination.

Under one level the San Antonio River Walk cuts through everything as a very small town within a city. Where roadside cafes and restaurants buzz around the winding river in the heart of the city it is struggling to (re) define itself.

It's not far south in the aptly named Southtown neighborhood. Streets of wooden bungalows and stately Victorian houses are gradually disappearing. It has been renovated and repainted in bright shades. Some of them have been converted into art galleries or coffee shops. Create a new, eclectic and energetic cultural district. north of downtown The old brewery has been converted into a chic square with restaurants, shopping and, of course, beer. The larger art museums are surrounded by cities that stretch for miles. There are more than a few billboards promoting gun rights.

As one of our taxi drivers said. No building in San Antonio has ever been demolished to make way for a new one. Everything has been redesigned and reinvented for a new generation.

In the midst of this identity crisis you'll find plenty to do There's plenty to see and do over the weekend in this southern US city.

Begin your journey in the heart of San Antonio with the must-see San Antonio River Walk. This is a relatively small U-shaped section of the San Antonio River surrounded by small restaurants and shops. People-watching is like a primo and you'll enjoy wandering from one end to the other. Everything is a story below street level. A pedestrian-only walkway flanking the river is accessible by the many steps that line the walkway and a bridge over it.

Although the area is specifically called the River Walk, it runs several miles north and south of the commercial district. And it's a great way to exercise and feel closer to nature.

Things To Do On The Riverwalk And In San Antonio

Don't miss a river cruise or take a water taxi while you're there. Please note that the cruise will be accompanied by an informative guide. While the usual water taxi rides are hop-on hop-off without a guide, like a bus.

Time Commitment: Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours here, including meals, and longer if you're cruising the river. We go there almost every day we go. The River Walk is enchanting by day and magical by night.

When you're done strolling the River Walk, climb the stairs on the south side to the historic arts village of La Villita. Old houses have been converted into shops with various arts and crafts. From novel stained glass, Day of the Dead engravings, bright colors, oil paintings. Copper vases and bowls

Within a 15-minute walk west of the River Walk area is the historic Market Square, an open-air plaza with shops and Mexican restaurants. If you like kitsch this is the place to come. You won't find pottery or handmade jewelry here. But you will be amazed by the wide variety of jewelery, clothing and “art” of flea market quality. The colorful flags hanging above and the music playing through the restaurant's speakers give it a festive vibe. Hey, maybe you'll find a little memento among the mess to take home.

Time limit: 30-45 minutes; Add to that 30 minutes or more if you have lunch here. A restaurant worth eating at

No visit to San Antonio is complete with a visit to the Alamo. This historic fort was the site of a violent military confrontation in 1836 that became a turning point in the Texas Revolution. The building itself is small and a bit cluttered. But it's still worth visiting for its extraordinary status. Surrounded by beautiful grounds and exterior buildings, it represents the lives of the soldiers who were stationed there in maximum force as a military outpost.

Before You Visit the Alamo I suggest you watch a movie about the confrontation. which was showing in a cinema in the adjacent shopping center. There is no entry fee to the Alamo, but there are movies.

I must be a closet botanist because I love visiting gardens, indoors, outdoors, big or small, I love them all, so you won't be surprised to hear that the botanical gardens were probably my favorite part of my trip to San Antonio. Even though when we were there the weather was cold and rainy.

This sprawling complex features outdoor gardens of various types. including a Japanese Zen garden and several indoor gardens. Each garden has a specific climate. Huge statues scattered around. And there's even a giant chess set if you need a little intellectual stimulation while at it.

This small but cozy cafe offers a great lunch menu. and a small gift shop

Time commitment: 2-3 hours, even in the rain. Let's say you enjoy looking at trees as much as I do.

From personal experience I highly recommend the San Antonio Museum of Art. It has a large collection ranging from ancient Egyptian tomb relics to modern paintings. All this housed in a beautiful old building.

The Witte Museum is located over the road. A few blocks away from the Botanical Gardens. There are exhibits about Texas nature and history. Time prevented us from going there. So tell me what you think if you go there. as well as the McNay Museum of Art (medieval to contemporary American and European art) and the DoSeum, which looks like a fun place to take the kids.

This former brewery complex has been converted into a lively shopping/restaurant centre. which is even a farmer's market on weekends Please note that the shops are closed in the evening. (Mostly before 6pm, with a few exceptions which stay open until 7pm), although restaurants do stay open after.

Next to the towering flour mill just south of downtown is the restaurant Guenther House, once home to the founding family of Pioneer Flour Mills. Or plan to wait for your table for an hour or more.

For example, arrived at around 10:30, waited for more than an hour I almost gnawed my arm out of hunger. And couldn't wait that long so off we went, I was disappointed I didn't try their amazing biscuits.

After you've had your fill of biscuits and jam at Guenther House, step outside and explore this fascinating historical ministry. Officially known as the San Antonio Mission National Historical Park, it was built in AD 18.

The puritan aesthetic's mission lived up to its original purpose of bringing Catholicism to the local American Indian population and helping protect the land.

The park is made up of four mission/tourist areas spaced several miles apart. We visited Mission San Jose, where the park's visitor center is located. The visitor center has a short film about the mission. Historical information and artifacts about life there. and a small gift shop with lots of good books to choose from

This is my second favorite activity during my trip to San Antonio. And I hope we have time to visit these four missions. If you like history or just want to be outdoors and see beautiful architecture this is the place to be. You will enjoy this mission. You can reach the mission by car. (We take a taxi), bus or bicycle.

Go Rio San Antonio River Cruises

Time Commitment: Half a day or more to visit all missions. Set aside at least 1 hour for each task.

This aptly named neighborhood is just south of downtown. Concentrated around Jalan Flores Selatan, it has been transformed in recent years into a fledgling and smaller arts district, so don't get your hopes up too high. But this converted gallery houses an eclectic mix of art by local artists. and give this area a boho vibe. On the first Friday of every month the Gallery will be open until 22:00 for the First Friday Art Walk.

Time Commitment: 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on what's open and whether or not you're eating there (see below).

While you're in the area, stop by Hot Joy for delicious Asian fusion dishes that are creative and unique to the restaurant's décor. How could a place called Hot Joy go wrong?

San Antonio, Tx

The best Mexican food we've had in San Antonio. (And we have a lot of them) from the Rosary shop. The restaurant is large but fills up quickly. especially on weekends So better make a reservation or come early if you don't want to wait. They also have a location north of town.

I didn't cover all the things to do in San Antonio during my visit. So I can't guarantee it.
